Late last month, Jackson County officials announced the U.S. 441 Development Ordinance, which is in its first draft. The ordinance is intended to ‘clean up’ the look of the U.S. 441 corridor in Whittier from a clash of billboards and ‘unregulated growth’ for a better mountain-themed look with careful landscaping and distinctive architecture. For over a year now, the county-appointed steering committee has been putting together a document stating necessary changes in landscaping, architectural standards, advertising sign size limits, and required screening of dumpsters. Committee members feel that it is important to make this area aesthetically pleasing as it is an entrance into one of the major attractions of the area—the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Cherokee.
The development ordinance will need to be presented to the planning board for review where it will then go to the county commissioners for the final decision. For more information on what the U.S. 441 Development Ordinance entails visit www.smokymountainnews.com.
