There is a magical shadow in Cashiers NC. The Shadow of the Bear is a landmark of sorts, only visibly at a certain time of day and year in our stunning mountain area. A myth of sorts, the Shadow of the Bear brings viewers from near and far to watch a giant shadow in the image of a bear crawl across the stunning Fall landscape below.
Where does our Cashiers bear occur? The best place to watch is on Highway 64 right near the Macon and Jackson County line. 5 pm is the magical time to start the transformation as the sun sets behind Whiteside Mountain and creates the magical transformation that goes from nothing to a turtle, to a cat, to a floppy eared dog, and finally to the bear. The bear is typically visible from 5:3-0 to 6 pm, mid October through early November.
Now is the perfect time to plan a trip to Cashiers NC. Come see the Shadow of the Bear and explore the beauty of Highlands and Cashiers. Our area is magical at any time of the year but right now offers a great opportunity to witness something very unique.
